The AIDS Immunopathogenesis Unit, based at Instituto de Salud Carlos III, offers a group of patented (Publication number WO2005/108588) HIV-based recombinant viral vectors with proven utility to evaluate the following aspects related to HIV-1 infection:

  • Phenotypic determination in clinical samples of viral tropism before starting treatment with CCR5 inhibitors.
  • Titration of neutralizing antibodies activity in order to assess the efficacy of new vaccines.
  • Screening and characterization of the antiviral activity of collections of compounds.

The assays with these constructs are really competitive (cheaper, quicker and very reliable).

Besides this technical platform, we have generated a large collection of recombinant HIV-1 clones with specific characteristics regarding tropism and resistance to different antiretroviral drugs that are very valuable.

Trained technical personnel and senior researchers that work in the lab continuously improve these techniques. A large set of publications has been produced describing the different applications of this technology and validation of the different tests.
